The Sun Link streetcars, manufactured by Oregon Iron Works/United Streetcar, will be among the first batch of “Made in America” streetcar vehicles in 60 years. Eight all-electric, state-of-the-art streetcars will be housed, repaired and cleaned at the Operations & Maintenance Facility at 290 E. 8th Street. Each streetcar is required to undergo rigorous safety and system testing mandated by Federal Transit Administration before passenger service starts in the summer of 2014. Each streetcar will be able to hold approximately 148 passengers and feature:
- A customized cooling system for our desert climate
- Low-floor doors, with easy on-off for wheelchairs, bicyclists and strollers. There are passenger doors on both sides of the streetcar to allow each car to be bi-directional and accommodate stops on the side of the road and middle of the road.
- ADA accessibility - LED information and Braille signage
- An all-electric, green transit option that connects to Sun Tran and Cat Tran.
Bicyclists and motorists will share the same travel lane with Sun Link streetcars. Streetcar drivers must obey the same traffic and speed laws as any motorists. The system is compatible with on-street parking.
