Building the Sun Link system was the City of Tucson’s largest construction project to-date. It included the removal of existing asphalt, relocating and replacing underground utilities, installing concrete embedded rail, repaving, installing the overhead contact system and vehicle stop platforms. Project construction began in April 2012 and was substantially completed in October 2013– a fast and ambitious time frame for a project of this caliber. The extensive nature of this work meant that different crews worked simultaneously along the corridor, within roadway closures and traffic detours.
